Eustaquio’s Last-Gasp Strike Sends Canada Into World Cup Round of 16

Canada booked its place in the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in the country’s history, defeating South Africa 1-0 on Sunday thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time goal from Stephen Eustaquio.

With the match deadlocked at 0-0 and extra time looming, Eustaquio received the ball on the edge of South Africa’s penalty area in the second minute of stoppage time and fired a powerful strike past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, sending the co-hosts through to the knockout stage at Los Angeles Stadium.

“We just kept believing, we kept pushing, and I think we couldn’t have imagined it any other way,” Eustaquio said after the match. “Everybody put a little bit of power on it, and it went to the back of the net, so I’m very happy.”

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch praised his team’s resilience, saying his players had created chances throughout the game but hadn’t been “lethal enough” until Eustaquio’s late intervention. “They are now Canadian heroes,” Marsch said. “I’m so happy for them.”

The first half was tightly contested, with both sides searching for an opening. Canada’s best chance before the break came from a goalmouth scramble, while a non-call on a possible penalty for a foul on Richie Laryea drew loud protests from the crowd and from Marsch himself.

South Africa held firm defensively in the second half, limiting Canada’s opportunities until Eustaquio’s decisive strike. Canada’s lineup was boosted by the return of defender Moise Bombito and the World Cup debut of captain Alphonso Davies, who came on as a second-half substitute.

Canada will next face the winner of the Netherlands-Morocco match in Houston on July 4, with a place in the quarter-finals on the line. South Africa, meanwhile, exits the tournament after reaching the knockout round for the first time in four World Cup appearances. The match also marked the World Cup farewell for 74-year-old South Africa coach Hugo Broos, who said it was his last tournament.
